Reading Behavior in Online Poker
If one would want to excel in poker, one needs to consider it as a game of strategy rather than luck. Reading people's behaviors is a vital point in winning most poker games. One's knowledge of when they bluff and when they slow play would oftentimes be the deciding factor of the game. However, in a virtual setting, that is, in online poker, the way one would read behavior changes drastically.
The bulk of these changes rely on the fact that, in online poker, players do not sit face-to-face. That means behavior needs to be redefined. No physical reactions could be observed, such as facial expressions, changes in the pitch of the voice, and other body language.
Therefore, behavior in online poker becomes restricted to game actions themselves: betting patterns, pot odds, playing speed, fold or flop percentages, and certain online-specific actions like auto-plays and checkboxes.
Restrictions, however, does not always mean disadvantages. Having no visible physical reaction or body language in online poker also means that the game is reduced to its most simple aspects. Reading behavior would then become easier, because you would be more focused on the game itself and less on the people playing it.
For example, instead of trying to figure out the parallelism of players' behavior with their cards, one would only need to look at the consistency of their betting patterns in online poker. One might need to observe: Under what circumstances does the player bluff? When do they slow play? Do certain players reach a certain threshold, that is, do they fold when they need to make a risky call?
Having no visible physical reactions in online poker also mean less distractions. While this might mean a disadvantage for you, if you employ distracting other players as a strategy, it also opens up another possibility for distraction: playing erratically.
Since you could be sure that almost all players in online poker would be searching for consistencies, then being inconsistent would be a possible winning play. This means that one needs to be careful in creating habits: try to avoid making certain moves just at some specific circumstances.
For example, try to bluff not only at the most advantageous times, but also when bluffing for you seem to be a major disadvantage. You will be losing some, but you will see that because other players will have a difficult time reading your behavior and would probably fall into your traps later in the game, it would be a worthy investment.
Reading behavior in online poker means reducing behavior to poker's most simple aspects. Since one could not see any visible physical activity, one needs to rely on the actions players perform on the game itself. In order to be a good player at online poker, one only needs to focus on the game itself and less on the players. Doing so would not only help you in playing, it would also win you the pot.
