Why Skill is More Important than Luck in Poker
As you begin to play Poker you will see players who are able to win more consistently and others who seem to lose most of the time. The difference, for the most part, is that the winning players make use of skills while the others prefer to depend on luck.
It is true that luck plays a factor, but you must also know the basic and advanced Poker strategies in order to become a successful player.
It is a fact that chance is involved in the handling of the cards, and that there will be days when you will lose to a fish, which is also something that happens to even the best Poker players in the world. However, with the appropriate skills in hand, you will be able to limit the amount of influence that luck or chance can have in your game.
In order to see the difference between relying on luck or skill to win Poker one should have long term profit goals. With knowledge of the odds involved in the hands and in the pot, you know that in the long run you will be able to win more games. While you may lose a few games here and there, and even have downswings, you know that in the long run you will still have a profit, and that is what matters.
Contrast this with the player whose Poker strategies consist of playing to the luck of the draw. While they may win big today, that is not guaranteed to happen again in the next hand, let alone the next few sessions.
Luck is simply unreliable. The fact is that even if you win today, the tendency to depend on it again and again (which is what will likely happen when you win once) will simply destroy your bank roll. Once that happens, they will come back into the next session and do it again, with the same results.
The way to see the difference between the players who depend on luck and those on skill is to just develop a long term plan. In a matter of weeks you will see the difference as you play based on skill. The discrepancy between the two player types will also become conspicuous when you play in tourneys.
Keep playing this way and you will profit, especially from Poker players who would still rather play based on the whims of Lady Luck.
